My aunt DJ Sandra Suave was scheduled to play a set at BBlyss’s event tent during Chicago Pride Festival. Thanks to that, I was lucky to be invited to capture the set as well as a performance from an African drummer team that was also a part of the show. Growing up queer, with a queer mother, and other queer adult role models in my life was a privilege I won’t soon forget and will always be thankful for. I grew up watching my mom actively build, create, and maintain safe spaces for the queer community here in Chicago and it’s what fueled my drive to do the same in my art work. And it makes moments like these, where I get to not only be apart of but work for a community that has uplifted me up so much, nothing short of an honor.
