concept
The core look we were aiming for was 80s punk vs y2k fashion vs ethereal fairy and I think we nailed it. Hope is one of my favorite models to work with because of their effortless ability to style exactly what my mental vision sees as well as create a make up look to match. With a background in dance and a highly spiritual presence they bring fluidity and serenity to set every time. I pride myself on my ability to capture models inner essence despite being in unnatural settings at times and it is never a challenge to do that when working with Hope. Their authenticity shines right at the surface. For fashion shoots like these I enjoy creating a story to match the look in order to bring life to the outfit. The story for this shoot was “stumbling across a fairy dancing in their garden, they notice you and begin to perform for your camera”.
When framing each photo I focused on key aspects of the clothing such as the different textures layered on one another as well as the highlight points in the silver accessories. Catching the light on a hair clip to draw the viewers eye up, framing a shadow on part of the models face to draw attention to the bright and bold makeup, and pulling slightly out of focus to bring in that hazy and ethereal feeling. Positioning the the model in front of a pocket of sun rather than directly in front is an excellent way to bring in that halo effect without completely turning them into a silhouette. I adore when shots look like stills from a movie, a distant memory frozen in time, and brought some of that nostalgia out in my edits by focusing on softening the colors, highlighting the greens and yellows, and crisping up the shadows.
Since this was still a fashion shoot after all, we took a short break from the nature background and moved to a more simple setting in order to bring the focus on the outfit completely. When taking these shots we channeled teen vogue it girl vs indie tumblr queen as our mood inspiration and kept the posing very lax and comfortable. Natural positions but still aimed to show off the entire outfit as one whole look rather focusing on the details.
social media aspect
This was shot during a time when I didn’t have a strong focus on taking bts videos and instead lost myself in the process of creation. Nonetheless I wanted to create a video accompaniment highlighting the fashion, setting, and the story we created for the look while also displaying the photos in a fun and engaging way. Snipping together pieces of the videos I did take, I combined it with images from the shoot that when rapidly viewed give the impression of the model dancing which tied directly back to our original creative story.
