concept

A more traditional take on lunar new year with a touch of nostalgia. Sasha and I combined our vision of clear lunar new year representation with the nostalgia of shopping for childhood snacks in the grocery store. I went back to an old editing style with the grain filter that I just felt was fitting for something tapping into the past. I saw on one of Sasha’s posts of this shoot a comment that said the grocery store shots reminded them of Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is such a huge compliment and honestly exactly the kind of vibe we were going for to hit those traditional Asian American vibes. Sasha styled herself beautifully in her traditional qipao from @daphalestudios and matching red beaded bag. Unfortunately we were stopped before we could take more photos in store and had to move outside but I think we got some great moody shots before then.

social media

I kept the social media aspect of this series relatively simple and opted out of previewing the shoot before posting like I did with the modern lunar new year series. Instead I continued the new video method of showing the moodboard and then the final photos for comparison, with relevant music in the background. It’s interesting to see if there are any drastic difference between the two, since when creating you do not always end up where you plan to go. That was not the case this time as I believe we hit the moodboard spot on.
