concept

This was one of those shoots where you go off instinct and watch what happens. I had been playing around with the idea of wanting to shoot in a grocery store for awhile but was still unclear on the exact execution. Coming off my previous shoot with Zhu and absolutely falling in love with what we created I knew I wanted to work with her one more time before she left Boston. I reached out and pitched shooting in my neighborhood asian supermarket and she jumped at the idea. She came brimming with ideas for the look. I knew I wanted the makeup simple and some kind of 90s vibe. She came with baggy shorts and a jersey that matched the color scheme I didn’t even know I was looking for perfectly. She even dug through my sticker collection and picked out some strips to to throw on her nose reminiscent of the asian bandaid makeup look. I loaned her my sweater which gave a perfect over size look and the styling was complete.

Zhu really let her dancer and wild side out in these shots which was even cooler to see with the juxtaposition of being in a highly public place where you are technically not allowed to shoot, like a grocery store(we made sure to buy some things at the end as a thank you for allowing us to do so). She kept a wireless beats in one ear and played kpop and hip hop music to help channel that 90s vibe to inspire her dynamic posing. Fuck boy butch they/them was the energy we sought as we ran and danced around the market, borrowing shopping carts and snacks as props. Luckily it wasn’t too crowded and we were able to shoot pretty freely without getting in customers way. I usually take point in shoots but Zhu had ideas of her own and so we matched each others energy allowing the creativity to flow back and forth as we explored the “set”.

social media

I kept the social media aspect pretty simple for this shoot and focused on simply sharing the photos in an easy to consumer video format. However I did make sure the to add videos showcasing a little bit of Zhu’s personality and the relaxed vibes of the set paired with a storytelling 90s hip hop audio track that perfectly encapsulated what we were aiming for while shooting.
